The Evolution Of : Oscar de la Renta

 Today the great Oscar de la Renta has passed away.To honor his memory,I invite you to remember him through his work in fashion history.


Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic and studied painting in Spain at the Academy of San Fernando.He developed an interest in fashion and started sketching for famous fashion houses from Spain.
Soon he was trained by the one he calls his mentor,Cristobal Balenciaga and later he left to Paris to work with Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin.

In the 60's he was one of the coutouriers that dressed the first lady,Jacqueline Kennedy.In 1963 he decided that he wanted to get into ready to wear instead of doing haute couture,because it was more profitable.He asked the help of Diane Vreeland, the editor in-chief of Vogue at that time,who advised him to work for Elizabeth Arden, because that's where he would increase his reputation and won't be eclipsed by Dior.

After 2 years at Arden, in 1965 he started working for Jane Derby and managed to launch his own label.Later, after Derby;s death he took over the label.In 1967 he married  Françoise de Langlade and became her third husband.She was the editor in chief of French Vogue and worked with Elsa Schiaparelli.Their marriage lasted until 1983, when his wife died.

In 1989 he got married for the second time to Annette Engelhard.


From 1993 to 2002 he was responsible for the haute coutoure collection at Balmain.

 In 2004, he added a less expensive line of clothing called O Oscar. De la Renta said he wanted to attract new customers whom he could not reach before.

Oscar was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.De la Renta died of complications from cancer on October 20, 2014 at his home in Kent, Connecticut at the age of 82.
