Movie Wardrobe: Marie Antoinette (2006)

No comments:
The "Marie Antoinette" 2006 movie retells the story of the Queen of France from a different perspective. She is seen as a teenager with no connections to reality who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.It won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, with Milena Canonero in charge of the wardrobe.

Marie Antoinette, Austrian costume. My favourite look.
Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette

Milena Canonero and six assistant designers created the gowns, hats, suits and prop costume pieces.

A nice, more simple Rococo outfit for Niamh...Seeing as how she's not a really fancy person.
Marie Antoinette, one of the best costume shots!

The crew recieved special permission to film in the palace of Versailles from the French government.Sofia Coppola was even allowed to film a ball scene for the wedding of Marie Antoinette with Louis XVI in the Hall of Mirrors, eventhough it was in restoration until 2007.

Other than the whole horrible death thing being Marie Antoinette wouldn't be too bad.

I really want this pink hair
Marie Antoinette Masquerade. Personally I'd go with a paler sheer lace because this makes her look a bit frightening
Marie Antoinette is seriously my favorite movie. Love the fashion, Kristen Dunst, Sofia Coppola and the soundtrack.

The wigs and the hair pieces were made by Rochetti&Rochetti.

Sofia Coppola asked the famous Spanish footwear designer, Manolo Blahnik, to create hundreds of specially made shoes for the film.Italian shoe manufacturer Pompei also designed a part of the footwear.

Love them all. Manolo Blahnik Marie Antoinette

In one of the scenes where Marie Antoinette is going through her shoes while preparing for a big party, a pair of blue Converse All Stars 1923 Chuck Taylor basketball shoes can be seen for about one and a half seconds.Of course that those kind of shoes were not even invented in that period of time and their presence in the movie wasn't a mistake.Their purpose was to portray Marie Antoinette as a typical teenage girl.

In one scene while Marie Antoinette is getting ready, a pair of blue Converse tennis shoes are visible in the scene. Sofia Coppola has stated in interviews that the shoes were purposely put in the shot to portray Marie-Antoinette as a typical teenage girl, despite the time she lived in.

The well known French brad, Ladurée, was chosen to make all the colored pastries and cakes.Let them eat cake, as her highness would say!

A part of the wardrobe worn by Hilary Swank in "The Affair of the Necklace" 2001 movie was also used in "Marie Antoinette".The affair of the diamon necklace was a big scandal in those times involving Queen Marie Antoinette herself. The original script of the movie briefly mentioned it, but it ended up never being used.

The red satin bejeweled gauntlets wore worn both by Kirsten and Hilary.

The red gown with three jeweled buttons seen on Asia Argento as countess of Du Barry, was also previously worn by Hilary Swank.

And the black and pink gloak can be spotted on Hilary and Kirsten too.

Also, the birdcage hat that Rose Byrne wears in Marie Antoinette is the same one Joely Richardson wears in "The Affair of the Necklace" as the queen herself.

This piece of jewelry was supposed to be a gift for madame du Barry from Louis XV who asked Parisian jewelers Boehmer and Bassenge to create a diamond necklace that would surpass all others in grandeur. Its cost was estimated at 2,000,000 livres and was made of large diamonds and elaborate designs of festoons, pendants and tassels. It was later broken up and the large diamonds were sold separately.

Reconstruction of "The Queen's necklace"

In 2007, John Galliano decorated the bodice of one of the gowns with a replica of this necklace for the Fall Haute Couture collection of Christian Dior.
